scream no...

more. it has been found. after two years of frantic searching, norwegian authorities have finally recovered Edvard Munch's two masterpieces, "The Scream," and "The Madonna" (but Cindi, is it the one with the big b**bies?). they were taken from Oslo's Munch Museum by masked gunmen, in broad daylight, in august 2004...pretty brash, if you ask me.

you wonder about the value of some paintings after they've gained some notoriety. take, for example, anything that van gogh rendered. when he was alive, vincent was viewed as merely a destitute Post-Impressionist Dutch artist who could have challenged mike tyson for the title of the "World's Greatest Ear Severer." the man died penniless at the age of 37...a hundred years later, his paintings go for tens of millions of dollars. of course, once people found out that van gogh cut off the lower part of his left ear lobe, wrapped it in newspaper, and gave it to a prostitute - he was deemed cool. and boom, everyone wanted his stuff for notebooks, posters, and post cards...so much that, in 1987, his "Irises" painting (see pic) went for a then-record auction price of $49 million. three years later, his painting, "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" commanded an astounding $82 million ($116 million in today's dollars). who knew? it's just sad that he couldn't reap any of these riches when he was alive...mebbe vince should've been a rock star instead. he was just born at the wrong time...

just recently, Gustav Klimt's "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer" sold for $135 million at auction. tell me, just who has that kind of money? i'll admit there are some wonderful Maya vessels and sculptures that i'd kill to have...but that's just a wild pipe dream. i guess it's all about investing. perhaps the Klimt, et al, will rise in value to even the $200 million heights...but will they ever reach the level of this lady...whose portrait is valued at $670 million dollars. sheesh. surely, that crooked smile could've easily been fixed for $10 million less ;) you KNOW Leonardo is gnashing his teeth right now!

take a wha???

hospital mebbe?

i went to the Cricket Store in Aurora to redeem a $25 coupon today. after 4+ years of their service, i got a little break. so after my acupuncturist appointment today, i headed out there.

as any other wireless store, it's in a strip mall. however, unlike the little store that i got my phone, you have to take a number and wait for it to be called by an automated voice. it was so...motor vehicle bureau. i was ready to take an eye test when i got up to the window.

totally weird.

the store even had a security guard(?!?)...strolling around...and telling newly arrived customers to take a number. have i missed something? since when is there security for cell phone re-sellers? is there copper wire in the phones that makes it so lucrative to steal?

have any of you experienced this at your wireless store? oh well. twenty-five bucks of next month's bill is still a nice gesture, even if redeeming it is like a lost Twilight Zone episode...

you...

might just make it after allllllllll. yep. we've been watching the first season of this show. somehow, it's not as hilarious as when i watched it as a kid...and the issues are certainly dated, but it is SO cool looking at the clothing and decor...very much an anthropological study of mainstream american culture in the 70's. correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't still hold the Emmy record of 29 wins for any series (comedy or drama)?

argh. the knee is still bothering me. after a week of icing it and two acupuncture sessions w/ needles and moxa heat, the edema has finally diminished 70-80%. i know my volleyball season is over :( i just hope my playing days aren't. isn't it funny how you inject all these silly ideas into your head and tirelessly replay worst case scenarios in your mind...only to find out all your so- called overreactions were, in fact, justified? i hope i'm wrong in all of this because i dread any sort of surgery. nevertheless, if it's necessary...what can you do?

save lio...

remember when i mentioned the new comic strip i had been reading in june? yeah...Lío. it's the second strip drawn my mark tatulli, who is known for Heart of the City.

well, right after posting about discovering Lío, i wrote to mr. tatulli, telling him how much i enjoyed the slightly twisted nature of his mischievous genius character.

recently, i received this email reply:

Dear Spencer...

First off, thanks for your kind words about LIO! I'm trying to bring something new and different to the comic pages, and I'm thrilled that there's actually people who "get it."

That said, LIO needs your help! Two newspapers are running polls to see if they should keep or drop LIO from the paper! As much as I hate these things, editors today seem to rely heavily on them, and since LIO is a new strip, it is always the first on the chopping block!

So please go to this site to vote for LIO (scroll to bottom to vote) at the Daily American:

http://www.dailyamerican.com/comics/comics.html

Also, to vote for LIO in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, send an email to the editor at this address:

comics_survey@pioneerpress.com

You can vote at this one once a day, so please send as many emails as you can! They say to vote for one to keep and one to drop...here is the list of comics:

Non Sequitur
Fred Basset
Mutts
Lio
Piranha Club
Dog Eat Doug
Sylvia
Red and Rover
Candorville

So please PLEASE help LIO out! I need all the help I can get to keep something new and original in the funny pages! And please tell your friends! Spread the word!

Thanks in advance for your support!

Mark Tatulli
LIO

so...vote if you can. gotta keep the creative ones alive...

scissors...

beats the shit out of paper. here's a clip from a japanese tv show where rochambeau (called Janken in japan) is taken to new heights in violence...

wha???

google has some really weird ads. since i posted about the funeral i attended ten days ago, there are three links to sympathy gifts, one to a memorial tree, and another to funeral ring tones.

wtf?!? funeral ring tones...okayyyyy

this household is in a lotta pain right now; we are ice pack maniacs. yesterday, i took lois to bunion surgery. that makes SEVEN surgeries in the last two years: two for cataract, four for detached retina, and this one. we got there about 8:20 and left at 1:50. good thing is the vicodin is keeping the brain occupied...the bad thing is she'll be wearing that cumbersome boot for eight weeks.

and while i've never had surgery myself (sound of knocking), i may be looking at some if my right knee doesn't get better. at the moment, i can't even straighten it out due to the pain and swelling. i'm just hoping that both are due to cartilage wear...which would only mean arthritis and a possible knee replacement down the road...gee, fun! however, if the swelling doesn't subside, i'll go to the doctor and get scoped if needed.

sigh

of course, i'll get my first opinion today at my acupuncturist's office. no, my acupuncturist will only needle me for the pain and swelling...it's her (orthopedic surgeon) husband who will give me a diagnosis.

ain't denial great?

puh-leeze...

some groups just have WAY too much time on their hands. tom & jerry?!? you have GOT to be kidding!

well, i'm off to get a haircut. i am one shaggy mofo. i even shaved so we can go to a suprise b-day party at gwen & jeff's. i hope wanda hasn't found out yet...

anyway, we just got her a bottle of portuguese wine and used a really cute wine bottle cover that we found at BigLots last year for $.75 (usually go for three bux). the cover is based on a chinese dress called a 'cheong sam' (chohng sahm'). my mom has one just like this from the 60's. still fits too.

and THAT'S what i'm doing today...woohoo

argh, my knees are KILLIN' me...

games...

people play. over the weekend, we stayed in (pretty much) and played Kismet and Scrabble...and drank margaritas :)

ever play Kismet? it's very similar to Yahtzee, but has colored dice and a slightly different scoring system. for example, the multi-colored dice call for color specific hands...like a same color full house or two pair. in Kismet, there is a tri-color scheme to the dice pips...red, green, and black. twos and fives are red, threes and fours green, and ones and sixes are black. also, the point bonuses are different than Yahtzee. a lot of fun though. it's a game from my childhood, when my sister, brother, his wife, and i would play on saturday nights.

ewww...

went to BigLots yesterday and bought some Sunkist Fruit Gems. you know what they are...right? if you don't they're just sugar coated jelly candies in five flavors.

GREEN = LIME
RED = RASPBERRY
YELLOW = LEMON
ORANGE = WHAT DO YOU THINK ;)
OFF WHITE = GRAPEFRUIT

which flavor do you believe deserves the 'ewww...'? yep, the grapefruit. at first, it was pleasant, reminding me of Squirt soda. it's the lingering aftertaste of black pepper that turns me off. even after downing a glass of water, the taste remains now...FIFTEEN minutes after swallowing it. blech

really though. if the grapefruit flavored gem is gonna be full of surprises, Sunkist should just put out some special gems. here's my flavors for their new 'SURPRISE' gems...tell me what you think

GREEN = SPINACH
RED = BEET
YELLOW = CORN
ORANGE = HABANERO
OFF WHITE = POTATO

there ya go. at least you'd know what to expect and take a multivitamin instead. geez, why do things hafta be so complicated...

saterrday...

was a lot different than friday. i accompanied my mom to a funeral. a man named ben, who used took cook at our restaurant in the mid-70's passed away, leaving his young wife and two children behind. or should i say survived by them...

anyway, ben was always a heavy smoker. i'm assuming he had lung cancer. all i can say is that his open casket was not very flattering. granted, mortuary science does its best...and mebbe the deceased shouldn't look too natural...but he was just plain purple!

it's sad that some of the people whom i grew up with, i only see at funerals. for example, san and jeff are cousins whom i saw regularly for fifteen to twenty years. however, i've only seen them a handful of times over the last 5-10 years. you grow apart...find new things...and conversations become innocuous time passers. what's even sadder is that we all still live in the same zip code!

oh well, i guess it's just the mortality that we all feel as we get older, eh? i know 36 isn't that old but i'm starting to go to more and more funerals for people who have known my family for years...50+ (years) for some. i wonder how my dad feels? i think i mentioned that he's probably the oldest of the ex-restauranteurs who came out of the 'New China' school of cooking in the 40's and 50's. at 87, he's gotta have a few more mortality issues than i...but he's probably at a lot more at peace with his life too. i hope i make it as far as he :)

after the services, we all gathered at China Jade restaurant. it's in the far east center on federal and alameda. unfortunately, this pic is of the vinh xuong bakery next door. i think there were 40 people. we ate steamed fish, crab, boiled chicken, fatty pork, seafood soup w/ tofu, rice, and thin rice noodles with veggies and fried tofu. yeah...lots of seafood. if you're from southern china, you eat a lot of soup, rice, veggies, and seafood. surprisingly, i didn't grow up on that much seafood even though my parents are from that area. part of it is due to the cost of getting seafood in a landlocked state and the rest of it is due to the time constraints...most banquet seafood dishes aren't easy to prepare. BUT i can tell you that i grew up on a LOT of steamed chicken, roast duck, bbq pork, soup, and veggies (like chinese broccoli).

it had been quite a long time since i had eaten at china jade. it was the only place that my parents would eat in the late 80's early 90's. that is, until the Empress Seafood Restaurant opened a couple blocks away. if you're looking for cantonese style food, the Empress and Kings Land are considered two of the best for mainstream chinese food. now, if you want REAL chinese food (some that i didn't grow up on), you'd have to go to places like JJ's or Super Star Asian. these places have the country style innards that were usually thrown away by my parents (even though they'll eat it on occasion). yeah.

i can't believe that i started talking about a funeral and ended up blogging about chinese food. geez. where's my mind?!?

well, ben, i hope you're resting peacefully. your sons are good kids who are going to make you proud. i'll always remember your big smile and laugh whenever you joked with dad.

mixed up...

titles.

can you guess what two movies we have at the house from netflixx?

we're going to watch some live gorillas on a misty sunset strip. btw, richard will be there.

give up?

a bit short...

the James Gang concert on Friday was really awesome, if not a bit short...80 minutes. i would've expected at least ten more minutes of music. oh well. at least we didn't get the $85 tix (ours were $62) because i'd be ranting about the short length of the show ;)

here's the review...

in addition to the group's tight performance, we were treated to watching the full moon rise over the horizon at 9:35. THAT was very cool. i had never witnessed that at Red Rocks. usually, i'd try to be in the first ten rows in order to see the band members w/o needing binoculars. so...having seats in the 41st row wasn't as bad as i thought it'd be.

tonight...

then...

and now...

going to see the James Gang at Red Rocks with my brother-in-law, who is also a big fan of Joe Walsh. it's going to be the first time they've toured in 35 years. wow

repeat after me:

'PLEASE GOD, NO RAIN TONIGHT.'

1st grade memories. who didn't love Electric Company ;)

just...

your average dyslexic fool counting his chickens.

that's me.

remember when i was doing an "I don't have jury duty" jig on monday? well, that came to a crashing end when i found the summons. turns out that my juror number was 3361, not 3811, which effectively put my dumb ass in the juror pool for tuesday.

i'm glad that i did locate the summons again, it's just unfortunate that it happened at midnight. and wouldn't you know it, i couldn't fall asleep until about 3:00.

so...i showed up with four hours of sleep. surprisingly, i didn't nod off once. in fact, i even kept a log of all the crap that went on from the time i got there until i was let off the hook in the afternoon. so here goes...

8:15...Arrived. It has been more than five years since I was last called for jury duty. Looks like they've replaced the old, orange, plush seats with forest green interlocking ones.

8:50...Video? They play a ten minute video now, describing how GREAT it is to serve on a jury...ri-ight. those people are so full of shit!

9:20...no action yet. still waiting for the first call/collection of jurors. think it's a good time to go to the bathroom...stretch a bit. although these green chairs are comfortable, they're not the great snoozers that they used to have.

9:22...figuring i might have a couple free minutes, i hustle down to the basement, where public court records are held. last year, i saw my friend, Sean, who used to be my doubles partner in volleyball. it had been almost ten years since i saw him last. he mentioned that he had worked in the basement for seven years and to visit him sometime. in anticipation of the pending jury duty, i had made him a CD of the Very Best of ELO. whenever i was in his car, he played three artists: ELO, the Eagles, and BOC. thought he might appreciate it if he didn't have it. well, when i asked if he was working, the people there acted like they had never heard of him. weird. oh well, maybe he's already quit. and from the attitude of those people, it wouldn't surprise me. they were sooo helpful...joiks.

9:37...there must be 120-150 people. I'm sitting in the center section, fourth row. On my left is a lady in her 50's...she has snall cuts on her right arm. must be cat scratches. the gal in front of me, in green, is reading Joseph Heller's Catch 22. she's engaged in a very one sided conversation with the lady on her right, overweight and on oxygen and talkative as hell. i can see her hairy upper lip quiver with delight as she pontificates on her exciting life as a preschool aide. kinda sad, she must be very lonely.

9:41...First round. Didn't get called...yay! people are so odd. two individuals who had their numbers called, acknowledged theirs being selected and remained in the back. hello! if you get called, don't you think you should assemble with the others? do you think you'll just be forgotten? anyway, there's a Japanese man in the fifth row, on my left. he reminds me of blue collar guys of the 60's...classic black plastic framed glasses, white socks, lace up oxfords, jeans that are too big for him, and shirt that could be tucked in. hmmm. whose time machine did you ride in on?

9:52...there's a lady in a hot pink tank in the front row, reading the classified section. wish i had a paper. i just brought a travel book that i'm not too keen on reading. ugh. my right knee is hot from playing the night before. glad i'm taking today off from playing. across from me is a lady who was dabbling in a Sudoku for Children book. she just downed a golden delicious apple and is busily reading a magazine, copying article parts and tearing out coupons. hope it's her magazine; there's nothing more annoying than reading a torn up magazine in a waiting area. on a bench, along the right-side wall, is a woamn in lilac. she has been shooting the breeze with an african american man w/ a pierced left ear. he's got on an olive colored short sleeve shirt, brown pants, thin gold chains, black wire rims, and is pretty much bald. he's probably about fifty. you know, i don't understand men who are over forty and still sporting a pierced ear. when i first saw him, he reminded me of a bald morgan freeman - a great actor who should do without the earring. dude, you're almost seventy...get rid of it! anyway, the lilac lady is full of colors. not only is she sporting a teal top underneath that vest, but she has brought out some needlework...burgundy with lots of flowers. i tell you, it's a cacophony of hues over there on that bench.

9:57...there's a gal, mebbe 20 years old, two rows up from me, who's vainly trying to twist her body into a crescent moon shape to sleep. as she tosses and turns, i turn my gaze to a young man across from her. he's got low riding jeans and some super thin flip flops. i don't get how he can be mobile. if i were dressed like that, i'd have an uncanny feeling of tripping on those sandals while fumbling with my pants, which, by now, have fallen around my ankles. i JUST don't GET it.

10:11...when's round two? i'm getting kind of anxious. the last two times i was called for jury duty, i almost made it to noon without having my number picked. mebbe the third time will be a charm...pleeeease. lady on my left has just put her book down. it's called The Lincoln Lawyer, by Michael Connelly. fiction? something i don't read... I just noticed a couple things about her. On her left hand, she's got a pretty cool black pearl ring. You can also tell that she's had some plastic surgery, most likely a facelift. she's got some beady eyes and WAY too smooth cheekbone skin. Entertainment Weekly. some man in a seersucker shirt has just strode up to the front to return this magazine and is presumably looking for more titillating reading...like Playboy. nope. think i saw two other guys absconding with the tattered issues of Penthouse and Hustler. sorry pal. ewww. facelift lady had been chewing/sucking on something for quite awhile. turns out to be a contact lens that she was rehydrating! the horror...think of the germs...and to think that i did that on occasion in my teens...shudder

10:22...Numerous cops and sheriffs coming in for the free coffee at the back of the room. Do you ever look around to see if you know anyone? i had seen 3-4 people who looked familiar. maybe familiarity conjures a feeling of comfort/security. speaking of which, a guy with a blue Coors t-shirt who was standing in front of me earlier, smelled like greasy, cig smoke, and probably hadn't washed his hair in a week. no comfort there.

10:31...just 89 more mintes before they turn us loose. either everyone's getting a late start or there's not much going on. then why the 120+ people? what kind of wacko random lottery is this? and who gets the Shirley Jackson jury duty...rocks anyone? still anxious...still dread being here. when's lunch?

10:38...maybe i should get back to reading. i just looked over this literary masterpiece and am wondering how the hell i'm going to decipher my handwriting later. it has certainly deteriorated over the years. looks like i've filled 3/4 of the page with my not-so-lucid ramblings. come on noon, get here fast.

10:41...Round 2. DAMMIT! i was the last person to be called in my group. 60's Japanese man and greasy Coors t-shirt man also join me. we have until 11:15 to report to courtroom 320E. just hanging out in the lobby...pondering what to do for the next 30 minutes. originally, considered guying burrito heh but luckily they're too small for the money. can't unleash my flatulent fury upon the courtroom. so...just gonny hang out until then. still puzzled by the people in the basement. btw, Judge Johnny C. Barajas will be presiding over the courtroom.

11:01...I always forget how much beautiful stone is in this building. classic architecture. smooth granite. art deco wall sconces. one thing i never forget though...the perpetual old smell. not musty or moldy...just old. oh joy! courtroom 320E is a criminal court. wonder what's on the menu today? murder? larceny? felonious frolics?

11:30...finally in the courtroom. running late. judge seems pretty cool. he hopes to get the jury selected by 2:00. of the twenty potential jurors, i'm number 14. retro japanese man is #6 and stinky hair coors man is #16. our case today is 3rd degree assault and child abuse...not good.

12:15...got through our introductions. this is one educated bunch. two doctors (anesthesiologist and oncologist), a PhD candidate, a few MBAs, a few MAs, an attorney, a bartender, a couple students, two retired people, an engineer (japanese guy), a day laborer (Coors t-shirt), and me. off to lunch! got until 1:30. i think that leaves me enough time to go to Taki's.

1:15...making my way back to court. it's a really hot day. there's all kinds of loiterers around civic center. selling drugs. lying on spread out blankets underneath the trees. not a lot of action though... damn, bit my upper lip on my last bite of food. iced it down for fifteen minutes, but i wonder if it's gonna swell up and make me lisp ;) that'll get me out of serving...big ol' purple lip guy.

3:20...sigh. finally got out of there. right before lunch, the doctors were excused since they "had afternoon patients." uh-huh. i SO believe you. and five of us were just excused when we expressed our potential bias against the accused. let's face it, one look at him and his face screamed 'WIFE BEATER.' all kinds of red flags went up for me. sorry, dude. just be happy that you got a fairer trial without me. i HOPE you're innocent...but if you're not, i hope they stuck it to ya today.

knees...

ugh. i played ball yesterday, as usual. and i'm a bit sore knee and hamstring-wise. so what am i gonna do? go out and play in half hour ;) gotta do it. volleyball keeps me five pounds lighter and that much more creaky. besides, september's gonna be here before we know it and the first snow as well...which i dread.

actually, my playing volleyball tonight is in celebration of my presence not being needed for jury duty tomorrow. last month, the city of denver finally instituted a system, much like jeffco, in which you check to see (the night before) if your juror number is in the pool of numbers chosen for that day. my number was 3811, which was outside of the range #464-3444. whew! this is so much better than going down to the courthouse and waiting for your number to be called...and enduring the process of jury selection...only to be sent home (which is fine by me) a good six hours after your scheduled 8:30 arrival.

it would have been nice, however, to have that winning powerball ticket. even with the cash value of $82 million, i think i could find a way to spend it ;) even if i gave away ten percent of it to my friends, there'd still be nearly $74 million left over.

man, we would go on one AWESOME trip! to which archaeological site would you like to join me? we could go to Machu Picchu...

or Tikal...

or even Ankgor Wat...

i've been to Machu Picchu twice and Tikal three times, so you could have a little personalized tour. however, Ankgor Wat would be new for me too. just make sure you've got yer hot little passport ready when we go :)

not...

your average bird.

yesterday, right before i put the dogs out in the morning, i spied a raptor...standing in front of the ornamental grasses...like it was lost or something.

after checking out this site, i believe i've narrowed it down to a cooper's hawk:

it could have also been a sharp-shinned hawk, but it just didn't look like any of the pics at that site. unfortunately, i never heard either of the calls, so i still can't be certain of which species it was. nevertheless, it WAS a big ol' hawk that was hanging around the seed. mebbe it wasn't lost but waiting for an unsuspecting sparrow or mouse morsel.

kinda hope it comes back for an encore performance ;)

knack-re-us

beautiful...but glad i can view one in the comfort of my home.

Australian meteorologists have been observing the formation of nacreous clouds over Antarctica. presence of these rare clouds, which are low-lying and only seen in extreme latitudes, usually indicates global warming. granted, the earth has been in 'warming mode' for thousands of years...the industrial age has just quickened it (probably exponentially). nacreous clouds are rare because they're only formed when the air temperature (between 5-10 miles of stratospheric elevation) is less than -112 F. guess i'll never see one while lying on the beach in Cancún ;)

very cool (no pun intended) though. i wonder if this pic gives the phenomenon any justice. i bet it's even better if i were there...and freezing my ass/lips/eyes/balls off. nah. i'll just rely on the internet for the nacreous experience.

snip...

every once in awhile, there's a $2 off coupon (10 gallon minimum) at Shell gas stations, in the newspaper. and YOU know i keep an eye out for it. paying $3 for a gallon of gas still makes me nauseous. and when it costs $40-$50 just to fill up my ol' Honda sedan, every little bit helps. after all, if i can save $4 a month on gas, it's like getting a free tank of gas for a christmas bonus...or at least $50 to go towards booze heh

finally...

it's gonna be a bit cooler this week. after a summer full of 90+ degree temps, we may have to break out our fleece ;) i certainly welcome it though. the past two sundays i've been out playing ball and each time it was 98 or 99 degrees. ugh already.
